Big Sur Half Marathon

Big Sur half marathon is held on Monterey Bay in November and most of the run for the half marathon race is along the coastline.

In 2011, the race celebrates its ninth year. The course is along the coastline with incredible views of the Monterey bay. The 2011 race is scheduled for November 20, 2011. The Big Sur half marathon course map shows the amount of the course that is along the Pacific ocean.

The starting point of the race is in downtown Monterey and the finish location is the Custom House Plaza between Portola Hotel & Spa and Fisherman's Wharf. It is a small race with approximately 8000 participants.

Half marathon and smaller distances

Big Sur Half Marathon race is an incredible race to run for its views and the route along the coastline. Unlike the Nike half-marathon race, which has mainly women; this race has male as well as female participants. The race is held on a Sunday morning.

Additionally, smaller distance runs are available for running on Saturday. There is a 5K run and Kids 3K run.

Finisher's medal

The finisher's medal is a ceramic medal with a leather string. In addition, a technical fabric T-shirt is also given to participants. Free food, fluids and live entertainment and music is available along the course.

Other goodies

Big Sur Half Marathon also offers a 2 day health and fitness expo on Friday and Saturday before race day on Sunday. The packet pick-up for race bibs and timing tags is available during the Expo.

For those people who can only pick up their packets on race day, they do offer a race day pick-up from 5:30am to 6:45am before the race starts.

Besides this, there is the breathtaking course for the run along the coastline.

Big Sur half-marathon Race Registration

Big Sur race changes registration fees per the dates participants register. The earlier you register, the lesser you pay. The earliest registration ends on May 31st and you only pay $95. If you register after August 1, 2011, you pay a registration fee of $115. Anytime between June 1, 2011 to July 31, 2011, you will pay a registration fee of $105.

Big Sur race also offers youth registration for the half-marathon and it is $10 less expensive than the regular registration rates.

In order to register for the race, you can sign up at Big Sur 2011 Half Marathon Registration. You may also opt to register for the 5K or the 3K race.

Staying in Monterey Bay

Depending on the size of your wallet, you can choose to stay in a budget hotel, a family friendly hotel or an upscale hotel. The race has two host hotels:

  • Monterey Marriott
  • Portola Hotel and Spa
These hotels are located in downtown Monterey near Fisherman's Wharf and depending on the room you get, you will have spectacular views of the Monterey Bay.

Another option is to choose a less expensive bed and breakfast or a budget hotel and you can still take a short walk to enjoy the Monterey bay and the views.

Eating in Monterey Bay

Monterey Bay is a hot spot for tourists. The restaurants are aware of this and you will find a nice variety of food near downtown Monterey. Lot of different seafood is available near Fisherman's Wharf.

Besides seafood, you are sure to find a restaurant that has a cuisine of your liking.
