Running Base

It is essential to have a good running base before training for your first half-marathon.

Remember the time when you were a child? You were crawling and soon started walking. Could you walk across the entire house when you first started? No, you increased your distance step by step. Initially, you would walk just a few steps to get the balance. Soon, you started increasing your steps. Before you realized, you were walking with ease and could walk around the entire house.

Running is similar. You get the base for running and endurance first and then you increase the distance. If you train for a 5K properly, it is much easier to train for longer distances. Keep the child's walking example in mind as you start your first few weeks of running. How to Start Running is not as intimidating as some people believe it to be.

It is important to have a goal in mind when starting a running program. It could be

  • Run a race

  • Improve your fitness level

  • Lose weight

  • Lose a few inches to get into a smaller dress size

Or it could be something else. As long as you have a goal in mind, you will be able to stay committed to the program and reach your goal. Otherwise, there will always be an excuse to do it tomorrow. Combine running with cross training and rest for best results.

Train for a 5K and 10K before starting the training to run a half-marathon.
