Energy gels help improve one’s stamina. These provide carbohydrates to the body. Energy gel is often called sports gel, endurance gel, carbohydrate gel or nutritional gel. Energy gels are good for runners. Energy gels contain sodium, potassium and carbohydrates. Here are the reasons why runners benefit by taking energy gels.
- Running workouts are a high intensity exercise. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are burned when you run. Especially, the carbohydrates that are stored in your muscles starts to burn out. Energy gels replenish the carbohydrate storage. So, it gives more fuel to help you keep running. However, you must know that energy gels are not helpful for short distance running. This is because it takes about 45 minutes to one hour for the energy gel to covert to fuel. So, energy gel is only useful when you are running for more than an hour.
- Energy gels have some psychological benefits. When you consume it, your brain gets the signal that you have taken something which will boost your energy level, so you start to run harder and faster.
You can find energy gels in gel packets which are about 4.5 inches long. You should take energy gel 15 minutes before you start running and then 30 to 45 minutes after you start to run. The amount of energy gel intake depends on the body weight, metabolism and fitness level of the athlete. You can buy energy gels from any sports store.
One thing that I do during my runs is to use my favorite gps running watch to alert me every 30 minutes. This helps me on very long runs where I need to consume a gel pack every 30 minutes. When I talk about long runs I’m talking 10-20 mile runs where it is really crucial to keep your energy levels up. I also like to favor gels that have extra electrolytes in them as well.
Hammer Gel packs have been my favorite ones to use for long endurance training.
